SUMMARY:Global Leadership Youth Program Summer 2021
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for GLYP!\nStudent programming is back! This Summer we are slated to run what is quickly becoming one of our flagship offerings\, the Global Leadership Youth Summer Program (GLYP). Open to students entering grades 8 -12\, this program gives students valuable skills including negotiation\, global awareness\, and an understanding of diplomatic processes. This program has been made possible thanks to the academic partnership of La Jolla Country Day School and the generous support of Nordson Corporation Foundation and Five Together Foundation. \nThe Summer 2021 iteration of GLYP will include all of the most-loved components of our previous student programs including diplomacy simulations\, guest speakers\, deep-dive projects\, and ample opportunities to connect with like-minded students. However\, there are several pieces to GLYP that may look different this time around\, including participation from students outside of the U.S.\, and optional in-person site visits and workshops. \nThis program allows students to engage in a more immersive environment as they explore their interest in international affairs. The program offers several modules\, including the following: \nGLOBAL PRIDE: ADVOCATING FOR LGBTQ+ RIGHTS\nJune 28 – July 2\, 9:00 – 11:45 am PDT daily.\nWhile tangible progress has been made in recent decades to secure rights and protections for LGBTQ+ people (lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer or questioning\, intersex\, asexual\, pansexual and others)\, this community continues to experience widespread discrimination and human rights abuses on every continent. LGBTQ+ individuals face marginalization\, repression\, imprisonment\, and the threat of extreme violence or death\, while queer and transgender activity has been criminalized in over seventy countries. Even in the twenty-nine countries that legally recognize marriage equality\, protection from discrimination often remains inadequate; many LGBTQ+ individuals lack access to social and commercial services\, health\, education\, health\, employment\, and housing. As we mark Pride Month in San Diego\, we will examine how the international community can advance meaningful social and political progress toward protecting human rights among the LGBTQ+ community. \n“OF THE PEOPLE”?: DEMOCRACY IN DANGER \nJuly 5 – 9\, 9:00 – 11:45 am PDT daily.\nIn the Gettysburg Address\, President Lincoln called on his fellow citizens to act so that “government of the people\, by the people\, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” In 1863\, representative democracies were the exception rather than the rule; one hundred sixty years later\, decades of decolonization and the fall of the Berlin Wall broke open the constitutional floodgates with new governments pledging to protect individual liberties. Yet two decades into the twenty-first century\, the temptations of illiberal democracy have fueled the rise of autocratic leaders threatening the hope and promise of the people’s rule. This module will explore the contemporary tendency towards authoritarianism and ask whether the world’s democracies can nobly preserve what Lincoln called “the last best hope of earth.” \nTHERE IS NO PLANET B: ACCELERATING CLIMATE ACTION\nJuly 19 – 23\, 9:00 – 11:45 am PDT daily.\nAre we entitled to a healthy planet? A national youth coalition is suing the U.S. government for its outsized role in the climate change crisis thereby threatening their constitutional rights. Young people don’t carry the blame for the worst of our climate catastrophes\, yet their voices are increasingly calling for action. To surpass the 2015 Paris Agreement targets\, the world must collectively tackle this issue\, but barriers remain including economic concerns\, cultural and social norms\, and the United States’ shaky global leadership. What can young people do today to counteract the damage already done and ensure a sustainable future? In this module\, we will tackle the same questions global climate leaders are asking as they prepare for this November’s United Nations Global Climate Change Conference (COP26). We will also explore how to mobilize the remarkable will of youth climate advocates. \nOUTSIDE THE BOX: DESIGN THINKING FOR SOCIAL GLOBAL INNOVATION\nAugust 2 – 6\, 9:00 – 11:45 am PDT daily.\nIn the days when steam meant nothing more than water in gaseous form\, Leonardo Da Vinci once said\, “to develop a complete mind: study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see; realize that everything connects to everything else.” In the 21st century\, innovation occurs at an unprecedented rate. Changemakers are increasingly harnessing STEAM principles (science\, technology\, engineering\, art and math) to address the world’s most formidable challenges. However\, “learning to see” is about more than STEAM. It involves developing a design-thinking mindset: challenging assumptions and undertaking a deeper exploration of the problem in order to fully understand who and why. In this module\, using access to education during the Covid-19 Pandemic as a case study\, we will explore how design thinking helps global leaders become creative\, effective problem solvers and holistic collaborators. \nTo find out more about the Global Leadership Youth Program\, email Lulu Bonning at  lulu@sandiegodiplomacy.org.

SUMMARY:E-Talk-About Series: Vaccine Diplomacy
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the rising importance of vaccine diplomacy in the current climate\, the San Diego Diplomacy Council is proud to offer a unique discussion with Dr. Yanzhong Huang\, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations and professor and the director for global health studies at Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations. This event will take place on Zoom at 11 AM PST on May 18th\, 2021 as part of our E-Talk About series. \nVaccine diplomacy is among the most important foreign policy tools for countries seeking to shape their post-COVID international standings. Major powers including the People’s Republic of China\, India\, Russia\, and the United States have emerged as contenders in this quest. How do these countries differ in their motivations\, patterns\, and successes in vaccine diplomacy? Will their efforts encourage equitable global vaccine access or merely result in geopolitical frictions? \nDr. Huang is the founding editor of Global Health Governance: The Scholarly Journal for the New Health Security Paradigm. He has written extensively on China and global health in outlets including Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, the New York Times\, and theWashington Post. In 2006\, he coauthored the first scholarly article that systematically examined China’s soft power. He is the author of Toxic Politics: China’s Environmental Health Crisis and its Challenge to the Chinese State (Cambridge 2020) and Governing Health in Contemporary China (Routledge 2013). He has testified before congressional committees many times and is regularly consulted by major media outlets\, the private sector\, and governmental and non-governmental organizations on global health issues and China. He is an expert adviser of the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security\, where he chairs the China task force. In 2012\, he was listed by InsideJersey magazine as one of the “20 Brainiest People in New Jersey.” \nThe San Diego Diplomacy Council is honored to host Dr. Yanzhong Huang to discuss these important issues. \nClick Here to Register! \n

SUMMARY:E-Cultural Diplomacy Series: Book Conversation for Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Black History Month\, the San Diego Diplomacy Council is proud to offer a powerful reflection of Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Join us online on Wednesday\, February 24th at 7 PM PST to discuss the harsh realities of a menacing Caste system that exists and may sometimes thrive in our developed world. Wilkerson offers an unparalleled synthesis of the American way of life by conflating notions of race and caste. Rather than arguing they are synonymic\, she writes they often coexist and reinforce each other in a society: “Race\, in the United States\, is the visible agent of the unseen force of caste. Caste is the bones\, race is the skin”. \nOur co-hosts for this event are the two expert scholars Fern P. Nelson\, M.D. and Bashker “Bob” Biswas\, Ph.D. \nDr. Nelson\, an African American woman native to Detroit\, Michigan\, has also lived in numerous cities throughout the United States\, including Boston\, Washington DC\, Atlanta\, Chicago\, and currently San Diego. Nelson spent the bulk of her career teaching dermatology residents and students\, in addition to running her own private practice. She now serves as a member of the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art\, the Balboa Park Conservancy\, AND on our very own advisory board. She will share her experiences and reflections in light of the caste system here in America. \nDr. Biswas has an extensive and accredited career working as a professor at just shy of ten universities\, including Santa Clara University and the Zain International Graduate Academy. Bashkaralso has first-hand International Business knowledge serving as a Consultant and an International Executive in all continents of the world\, covering over 30 different countries. In her novel\, Wilkerson draws upsetting parallels between India’s treatment of its untouchables\, Dalits\, Nazi Germany’s treatment of Jews\, and America’s treatment of African-Americans. She notes\, each country “relied on stigmatizing those deemed inferior to justify the dehumanization necessary to keep the lowest-ranked people at the bottom and to rationalize the protocols of enforcement.” Due to his experience as both an Indian man and an incredibly accomplished businessman\, Dr. Biswas offers the global context needed to comment on such a comparison. \nThe San Diego Diplomacy Council is honored to provide a platform for these two bright minds to share their expertise and analysis. \nThis event is free. In this session\, we will examine the global outcomes of United States foreign policy with a focus on the Mexico City Policy\, access to education and reproductive health services\, and the role of non-governmental organizations. \nOcean Conservation: Every Drop Counts\nNovember 10\, 12\, 17 & 19\nAs Han Solo in Star Wars he traversed the galaxy\, but as an ocean conservationist\, Harrison Ford knows there is only one planet that we can call home. “If we don’t stop the destruction of our natural world\,” he says\, “nothing else will matter.” Oceans generate an estimated 50-80% of the oxygen we breathe\, regulate global climate patterns\, and support many diverse life forms. As such\, ocean conservation must be at the forefront of the climate action movement if we are to keep our planet blue. This session will dive into the feasibility of reversing ocean damage\, protecting our rich San Diego coastal environment\, and supporting global conservation efforts. \nWith Liberty and Justice for All?: Confronting Racism and Systemic Inequality Worldwide\nDecember 1\, 3\, 8 & 10\nThis year marks the 60th anniversary of four African-American college students who sat in protest at a segregated lunch counter\, which in turn inspired Freedom Riders of all races to put their lives at risk registering voters of color. As such\, the prominence of the United States’ global leadership placed the triumphs and tragedies of the Civil Rights Movement on the world stage. Today\, how can American actions in cooperation with the international community challenge the racial injustice pandemic that grips the globe? This session will examine how both government and citizen-diplomacy can chip away at systemic inequality abroad while also taking a hard look at pervasive racism at home in the United States. \nNot For Sale: The Miscreance of Human Trafficking\nJanuary 5\, 7\, 12 & 14\nAccording to the California Department of Justice\, human trafficking is the largest criminal enterprise in the Golden State\, with estimated annual profits of $9.5 billion nationally and $150 billion globally. From products in our homes produced by enslaved laborers to a growing underworld sex trade\, human trafficking infects our lives on a daily basis. Here in the border city of San Diego\, we live in a regional hotspot with approximately 10\,000 people having experienced human trafficking. This session will expose the scourge of human trafficking at home and abroad as well as discuss strategies to combat this lucrative illicit industry. \nOf Poaching\, Profits and Tiger Kings: International Wildlife Trafficking\nJanuary 19\, 21\, 26 & 28\nThe world currently faces an unprecedented surge in the trafficking of wildlife\, threatening both global security and decades of conservation gains. Much like with illegal drugs and arms\, dangerous international networks smuggle wildlife and animal parts and products across borders\, a trade valued at billions of dollars according to some estimates. While poaching threatens the last of the world’s wild tigers (numbering around 3\,890)\, U.S. audiences are captivated by the bizarre underworld of big cat breeding in the Netflix docuseries Tiger King\, which in turn perpetuates the exploitation and suffering of animals for profit. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO EXPRESS INTERESTED IN THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP YOUTH PROGRAM\, PLEASE EMAIL LULU@SANDIEGODIPLOMACY.ORG. \nTO REGISTER FOR THIS PROGRAM\, VISIT OUR EVENTBRITE PAGE.

SUMMARY:Global Leaders Online Program: Summer 2020 - Registration Open!
DESCRIPTION:Join the San Diego Diplomacy Council and La Jolla Country Day School for our groundbreaking Virtual Summer Global Leaders Program for students aged 14-18 years old! This unique opportunity will enable participants in San Diego and around the world to engage with questions plaguing the world’s most critical thinkers. From nuclear proliferation to sustainability negotiations\, our program has been curated with future leaders in mind. \nProgram Details: \n\nOpen to students aged 14-18 from around the world\nEnjoy as a four-week package\, or select weeks to suit your interests\nSessions run Monday – Friday\, 9.00 am – 11.30 am PDT\n10.00 am  – 10.30 am will serve as a break\, with optional cultural offerings\n\nLearning Objectives: \nAt the conclusion of each week’s programming\, students will come away with: \n\nA nuanced understanding of a timely\, global issue\nInformation about career paths in the field of international affairs and diplomacy\nIncreased cultural competency and understanding through strengthened leadership and civic engagement skills\nConnections with students and change-makers from San Diego and across the globe\nExposure to the cultures of participating countries through small-group led discussion\, cooking classes\, sharing of hobbies and favorite music\, and more\nA Certificate of Excellence in Global Citizenship on the topic of the week\n\nThese four one-week programs will be focused on global issues\, leadership development\, and diplomacy. Sessions will include dynamic international speakers\, small group discussions\, group projects\, a diplomacy simulation\, student-led sessions\, and cultural offerings including cooking classes and musical performances. \nThese Are the Stakes: Peacemaking in a Nuclear World\nWeek 1 (July 6-10): In the controversial 1964 presidential election ad\, a young girl counting daisy petals is engulfed in a mushroom cloud as President Johnson somberly warns us: “These are the stakes… We must either love each other\, or we must die.” More than a half century later\, the Cold War nuclear brinkmanship between the US and USSR is a topic of history books\, but the dangers of weapons of mass destruction—and of mass distraction—remain an ever-present and all-too-real threat. In this session\, students will examine peacemaking actions around the world and international efforts to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons. \nBridge Over Troubled Water: Resource Sustainability\nWeek 2 (July 13-17): Approximately 780 million people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. Meanwhile\, ninety percent of San Diego’s water is imported from Northern California and the Colorado River via an aqueduct over 200 miles long\, a fact that exposes the tenuous connection to sustainability underlying the prosperous society of America’s Finest City. In this session\, students will consider the critical challenges involved in ensuring access to water worldwide as well as the geopolitical consequences of water scarcity. \nGoing Viral: Pandemic Diplomacy\nWeek 3 (July 20-24): Until recently\, many of us associated the word “pandemic” with science-fiction stories\, popular movies\, or a zombie apocalypse television show; the year 2020 has brought home to us all the true meaning of the costs\, risks and challenges of a global epidemic. This session will focus on how engaged citizens around the world are responding to the new realities of COVID-19\, along with examining how the international community has acted in the face of other global epidemics in the past century with a particular emphasis on the HIV-AIDS crisis from the 1980s to today. \nTempest-Tossed: Borders and Immigration\nWeek 4 (July 27-31): The devastation of the Second World War left seven to eleven million people searching for a new home; today there are over 70 million refugees or displaced people worldwide. Despite being signatories to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and its promise of freedom of movement\, today’s economic powers nonetheless vacillate between open\, semi-open\, and closed borders in their approaches to immigration from developing nations. Meanwhile\, San Diego lies a stone’s throw from the world’s second-busiest land-border crossing. In this session\, students will reflect on the challenges and opportunities posed by ever-increasing global migration and the ways in which state\, international\, and non-governmental organizations respond. \nFor the program and more information\, please email lulu@sandiegodiplomacy.org. \nClick Here To Register
