Dr. Bruce Magid is a strategic advisor to corporations and nonprofit organizations, identifying growth opportunities, establishing partnerships, and securing funding. He currently serves as acting CEO of The Union, a community building social media platform for student athletes, coaches, parents, and teams. From 2016-2020, he served as EVP Partner Development for INTO University Partnerships, an international education partnering organization. He has held higher education leadership positions at Brandeis University as Dean of the International Business School and founding Executive Director of the Perlmutter Institute for Global Business Leadership, Dean of the Lucas College and Graduate School at San Jose State University, and Executive Director of MSU Global, Michigan State University’s online professional degree and certificate program. He worked at Bank of America from 1977-1998, based in Caracas, Venezuela, Sao Paulo Brazil, Miami, and San Francisco. Among various positions, he served as SVP Corporate Finance Latin America, Director of International Economics and Policy Research, and Senior Economist Latin America Division. An expert on country risk, he headed a number of the economic subcommittees for international banks that negotiated debt-restructuring agreements with Latin American countries.
Bruce began his career working as a Senior Advisor to the Minister of Planning, Venezuela. He has served on numerous civic and nonprofit boards including the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment and currently is a member of the Advisory Board of Universidad Camilo Jose Cela, a private university based in Madrid, Spain. He was the recipient of a fellowship to build a preschool in Mexico, an around the world study grant on global perceptions of United States culture and society and fellowships to complete his doctoral research in Venezuela. A strong advocate of connecting cultures through on-site experiences, he launched overseas immersion programs at SJSU and Brandeis University and co-led groups of students to Colombia, Panama, Cuba, and Israel. Bruce holds a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts and Harvard Universities) and a B.S.F.S in international relations from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Bruce and his wife Alexis, an artist, moved to San Diego in 2017.
