The House of Peru will host a candlelight vigil for Gladys and George Novinger who recently passed away while on vacation in Hawaii. The vigil is open to family, friends and anyone that would like to express their sympathy and support. Family members of both Gladys and George will be in attendance.
This is a tremendous loss for San Diego as well as for the San Diego Diplomacy Council. In addition to being co-chairs of the San Diego Diplomacy Council’s Advisory Board, George and Gladys were active members of our organization and its work for many years. As many of you know, George and Gladys Novinger set a remarkable example of what it means to care for the community. They were kind and generous people with a great commitment to international affairs. They took great joy in encouraging connections between our community and the rest of the world and were consistent advocates for our programs, events and hospitality opportunities.
Beyond their engagement with our organization, they were greatly involved with the San Diego International Affairs Board, The House of Peru and the House of Pacific Relations at Balboa Park. To quote one of our board members, “ We have lost two friends and two shining lights.”
Candles for the event will be donated and distributed by the House of Peru. Attendees are encouraged to wear warm clothing, comfortable shoes and bring a lawn chair for seating purposes. “No words can describe how sorry I am for your loss. I met George two years ago on an overnight stay at Hacienda. My wife was in her last stages of AZ and George was a superb host with accommodations for her needs. I spent nearly seven years in Saigon during the conflict and he and I had many things in common discussing the current problems in Southeast Asia.”

Very sad to hear this. News delayed here in Texas but just heard about this from California relatives. I met Mr. Novinger when my daughter and I stayed at the Hacienda last 2 days of February 2016. It was a gem tucked away from the city. Mr. Novinger greeted us at the door with a glass of wine and showed us to our beautiful room. He was very hospitable and was so enthusiastic about his Vineyard. So sorry to hear about Mr. and Mrs. Novinger’s tragic accident. Prayers to their families.
