Join us at our next Global Social Hour on Tuesday, September 18, sponsored by the Waitt Foundation and dedicated to marine conservation diplomacy. Dr. Margaret Leinen, Vice Chancellor and Dean for Marine Sciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego will welcome 6 international experts from the South-East Asia/Pacific Area who are visiting San Diego on the topic of fisheries management and marine protected areas. She will be joined by Jacob James, Managing Director of the Waitt Foundation, whose mission is to protect and restore ocean health. We will also have the privilege to hear from one of our international guests, Mr. Maru Samuels, who is a leader of the Maori community and manages the largest collective of tribes in New Zealand. As the General Manager of the Iwi Collective Partnership, he works toward finding a balance between indigenous rights, economic returns, and sustainability.
Our international group will be visiting from six different countries: Fiji, Japan, New-Zealand, Philippines, Republic of South Korea, Vietnam and Timor Leste. The international visitors will be visiting San Diego under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
