Get ready to break the monotony of your current home workout! San Diego Diplomacy Council is delighted to present to you our next fun Cultural Diplomacy experience: a Contemporary African Dance Class, led by Mandela Washington Fellowship Program alumna, Francisca Nyaradzo Nhongonhema, from Zimbabwe. You will get a chance to hear from Ms. Nhongonhema, as (spoiler!) our former Program Director Natalie Maroun, re-connects with her and discusses the movements she introduces in the dance class, her time in San Diego, the impact of international exchange, and what she has been up to since her fellowship.
Francisca Nyaradzo Nhongonhema is a Zimbabweanall round creative artist who has been working in the creative Arts and Media industry in Zimbabwe for 8+ years. Known as ‘Nyarie’ she is a holder of a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Zimbabwe. Additionally, she holds a certificate in Business and Entrepreneurship from the University of San Diego, California as well as a Certificate in Physical Theatre from Dell’Arte International in California. Currently, she is pursuing a Masters in Media and Communication at the University of KwaZulu Natal.
In theatre, Nyarie has been featured in multiple stage plays which won her two National Arts Merit Award for best actress in 2014 and 2016 She recently ventured into television acting with her debut in the film ‘Tete B’ which she co-produced in 2018. In 2019 she featured in a feature film titled ‘Shaina’ which is due for release.
More so, she is the founder and creative director of AFZAK Media. With AFZAK Media she has written, directed and produced a short film titled ‘Be Woke’. Nyarie serves as a voice over artist for Shona radio adverts and multi-lingual promotional radio adverts.
