The Global Youth Leadership Program is in full swing this summer!
During Week 1, instructor Lorrie Culver led the program, offering 13 students a unique opportunity to assume significant roles in a high-level diplomatic simulation centered around the Darfur Crisis. Divided into groups representing the U.S. Department of State, the African Union, the United Nations, and other stakeholders, the students crafted plenary statements, devised intricate strategies, engaged in negotiations with other groups, and more.

In addition to the simulation, the Global Leadership Youth Program students had the privilege of learning about International Relations from esteemed guest speakers. They had the chance to interact with U.S. Ambassadors Eric Rubin and Leslie Bassett, as well as gain insights from Sarah Federman, an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies. Week 1 was just the beginning of the program’s profound impact on our talented young students!
Week 2 is now underway, with La Jolla Country Day Science teacher William Doerge taking charge. The focus this week is on Climate Action: The Imperative of Ocean Conservation. Students are engaged in another diplomacy simulation, this time centered around Overfishing in the Pacific Ocean. They delve deep into stakeholder groups such as the Global Oceans Fund, Confederated Islands of Hiroot, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Through this simulation, students gain knowledge about various aspects of climate change, including deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollution. This week, the program comes with more insight from industry professionals in environmental action organizations throughout San Diego, including Wildcoast and Coastal Defenders. Exciting weeks lie ahead with more simulations and guest speakers planned for the enrolled students!
