The San Diego Diplomacy Council (SDDC) proudly hosted the 2026 Binational Youth Summit: Sparking Innovación on March 4, 2026, bringing together 350 students, teachers, facilitators, volunteers, and local experts from across the Cali-Baja region for a day of dialogue, discovery, and cross-border collaboration.

Focused on cross-border innovation, the summit invited participants to explore issues shaping the binational region, including cross-border commercial exchange, the Tijuana River and its environmental impact, cross-border education, cross-border art, cultural opportunities and challenges.

Throughout the day, students engaged deeply with one another and with local experts, reflecting the curiosity and leadership that make the Cali-Baja region such a powerful place for binational collaboration. Their reflections spoke to the summit’s impact.

Mateo shared, “Me gustó convivir sobre los temas que se presentaron enfocando el crecimiento económico mediante la frontera y fue muy divertido la dinámica,” highlighting both the value of the discussions and the energy of the program. Nicolás Ojeda reflected on the broader significance of the experience, saying he learned about “la importancia de la frontera y todas las ventajas que tiene para mejorar como sociedad.”

Other students emphasized the summit’s intercultural environment. Chet Kinzelberg shared, “It’s been amazing getting to discuss a wide range of topics with people of diverse backgrounds.” Participants described how valuable it was to hear from speakers and peers whose experiences challenged them to think beyond what they encounter in everyday life. Damian Casillas wrote that the summit helped students become more aware of others and the struggles they face, “It’s been great getting to hear from different instructors who make us think beyond what we may see everyday in our country. It also makes us sensible of others and the struggles other people can come up with.”

For many students, the event was both personally meaningful and empowering. Reyhan Sidal described the summit as “truly empowering,” sharing that the speakers helped illuminate the importance of students’ own strengths in the world of diplomacy. Claire reflected on how much she learned through conversations with others, writing that the event gave her the opportunity to learn about other people’s cultures and experiences while meeting a wide range of new people: “I have talked and learned a lot about other people’s culture and experiences. I am so lucky that I got this opportunity to meet with different people.”

Students also highlighted the summit’s commitment to accessibility and binational connection. Nina praised the event for creating a space where participants could contribute even if they were not fully bilingual, writing that the summit “did an amazing job making sure that everyone can understand. It made it so that if you have something important to say, you shouldn’t be afraid to share.” Emily similarly appreciated the welcoming environment, noting that translators and volunteers helped create a space where students from both sides of the border could connect: “I do recommend this event regardless of your Spanish level, as there’s translators and volunteers ready to help you. They created an environment where any student can get interested, and it’s been very fun for me!”

The Binational Youth Summit is a powerful reminder that young people in our region are ready to lead with creativity and a global mindset. We were inspired by the energy and thoughtfulness students brought to every session, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this gathering possible.

SDDC extends its sincere thanks to the 2026 participants, facilitators, volunteers, and local experts whose time, ideas, and leadership helped spark innovación across the Cali-Baja region.
