Combating Trafficking in Persons

October 30, 2018 - November 3, 2018

6 visitors from Indonesia will be coming to San Diego to expose GOI TIP actors to the full range of U.S. antiTIP practitioners among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, judicial authorities and NGOs in order to enable them to exchange best practices, learn new approaches and better understand the legal/institutional framework behind U.S. antiTIP efforts, which place great importance on close cooperation between all federal actors in the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, as well as between police, prosecutors and the NGO community on the local level. This will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the emphasis that U.S. law  enforcement and prosecutors place on investigating and prosecuting traffickers and spreading awareness among the local law enforcement community that TIP must not be considered a “victimless crime,” as well as showing the importance of the close relationship between TIP and child exploitation/child pornography.  This will also expose participants to a wide variety of trafficking patterns, which vary greatly depending on the economic and social factors of different regions, and give participants a better understanding of the rationale behind the U.S. approach to TIP victims, which is highly focused on supporting, reintegrating and empowering victims at each stage of the process.
