Connecting with Future Changemakers: SDDC at TritonMUN XXVIII

As part of my role as an Executive Intern with the San Diego Diplomacy Council, I had the rewarding opportunity to represent our organization at UCSD’s TritonMUN XXVIII, a Model United Nations conference that brought together high school delegates passionate about addressing global issues. This event was not only a platform to share SDDC’s mission but also a chance to engage directly with students eager to make a difference.    

The conference began with an inspiring speech by Leslie Bassett, lecturer at the University of San Diego, experience diplomat with over 15 years in foreign service, and a distinguished member of SDDC’s Advisory Board. She shared heartfelt reflections on overcoming adversity in the field of diplomacy, encouraging delegates to embrace challenges and explore the transformative power of cross-cultural understanding. Her words resonated deeply, inspiring many delegates who visited the SDDC table throughout the day.    

Empowering Students Through Opportunities 

Engaging with the TritonMUN delegates reaffirmed the importance of fostering global awareness at a young age. Many students were curious about pathways to internships or career opportunities that align with their interest in international relations. As someone who has benefitted from similar experiences, including a year-long exchange at Sciences Po Paris where I participated in discussions on diplomacy and foreign policy, I appreciated their enthusiasm and potential.   

Conversations with these students also reflected the value of diverse perspectives. Some shared innovative ideas, such as integrating technology into diplomacy or creating platforms for academic exchanges. These dialogues reminded me of my own journey of growing up across cultures in Africa, Europe, and the U.S., which instilled in me the ability to navigate and appreciate multicultural environments—an adaptability I bring to my role at SDDC.   

Looking Ahead 

Tabling at TritonMUN wasn’t just about representing SDDC; it was an opportunity to connect with and learn from the next generation of changemakers. The day’s meaningful exchanges reaffirmed the importance of SDDC’s mission to build bridges across cultures and empower young leaders to envision a better future.   

I see events like TritonMUN as vital stepping stones for young people to develop the skills and confidence needed to shape global change. As I continue my internship, I look forward to contributing to new initiatives, such as prop SDDC opportunities for high school students and fostering stronger partnerships with local schools and organizations.
