San Diego, CA — The San Diego Diplomacy Council (SDDC) is proud to announce the appointment of Suela Bala as its new Executive Director. Her appointment marks a significant moment for the organization as it strengthens its strategic vision and elevates San Diego’s role as a leading regional hub for international dialogue and global collaboration.

Suela Bala brings a distinguished record of leadership in international program development and cross-sector partnership building. Having worked across three continents, she has led initiatives that foster mutual understanding, institutional collaboration, and meaningful cross-cultural engagement. As an alumna of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), her career reflects a deep commitment to people-to-people diplomacy — creating opportunities for individuals from diverse nations and cultures to connect, exchange ideas, and build lasting relationships.
The San Diego Diplomacy Council’s mission — Connect People, Improve the World — underscores the vital role of citizen diplomacy in addressing global challenges and strengthening trust across borders. Suela’s experience in international development, diplomatic exchange, and strategic program design uniquely positions her to lead the Council at a time when global engagement and international cooperation are more important than ever.
“We are thrilled to welcome Suela as Executive Director,” said Board Chair Mark J. Ballam. “Her leadership, global perspective, and commitment to collaboration reflect the very best of our mission. Under her direction, we are confident that SDDC will expand its impact and further establish San Diego as a center for international dialogue and professional exchange.”
In her new role, Bala will guide the organization’s strategic growth, deepen local, national, and international partnerships, and expand diplomacy-driven initiatives that connect San Diego to the world. Her leadership will support the Diplomacy Council’s continued efforts to convene global leaders, strengthen institutional relationships, and promote cross-cultural understanding throughout the region.
“I am honored to join the San Diego Diplomacy Council and advance its important mission,” said Bala. “At a time when global collaboration matters more than ever, I am inspired to support programs that foster meaningful dialogue, strengthen international partnerships, and bring the world to San Diego.”
