As a sampling of our virtual programming, San Diego Diplomacy Council is delighted to present a special musical performance by International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumnus Mr. Quang Vinh Dong and the Suc Song Moi Bamboo Ensemble from Vietnam. This unique ensemble utilizes traditional bamboo instruments to perform both Vietnamese folk music and classical Western pieces, creating music that transcends genres and borders alike.
Mr. Quang Vinh Dong is the conductor of the Suc Song Moi bamboo ensemble as well as the Hanoi Voices International Choir. Born into a family of musicians, Mr. Dong’s father has a classical music background, while his mother, brother and cousins are traditional musicians. Suc Song Moi is the second generation of the Green Bamboo Family Ensemble, and has been invited to perform and collaborate with artists from around the world. Representing the Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Mr. Dong has performed abroad giving performances and speeches since he was 12. Mr. Dong gives concerts and lectures at universities in Hanoi, mentors students in his community, and joins in many charity performances geared towards marginalized populations who rarely or never hear such music in their communities.
Mr. Dong visited San Diego and several other U.S. cities in February of 2018 under the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) as part of a multi-regional delegation focused on promoting social change through the arts. During his time in San Diego, Mr. Dong and the other delegates met with art-focused community leaders, visited Chicano Park and other prominent sites in the Logan Heights community, and collaborated with each other and several local artists for a memorable Art Soup exhibition at Bread & Salt.
