E-Cultural Diplomacy: Photojournalism For Social Change in Slovenia

June 30, 2020: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

As part of our Cultural Diplomacy series, the San Diego Diplomacy Council is excited to share the creative work of the U.S State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alum and documentary photographer Luka Dakskobler from Slovenia. We invite you to:

1) View his video “Views on a Changing World” HERE, in which Mr. Dakskobler shares his stunning photography and the meaningful stories behind them on climate change, species preservation, anti-government protests and the Covid-19 lockdown in Slovenia; and

2) Join our live event on Tuesday, June 30th at 11am Pacific Time, where Mr. Dakskobler will be speaking about the stories in the video and the impact of his IVLP experience, and answering questions from the audience.

Mr. Luka Dakskobler is a well-known and respected photographer and journalist in Slovenia. He has been a regular contributor to National Geographic Slovenia for 16 years, and has also been published in many leading international publications, most notably The Guardian and Time Magazine.  In addition, he has ongoing partnerships with several socially-focused organizations throughout the country such as Zavod Apis and the Ana Monro Street Theatre Society.  He is a recipient of seven Slovenia Press Photo awards, three Nature Images Awards, a “Slovenia: Through the Lens of Human Rights” award, and has been shortlisted at the Lumix Festival for Young Journalism festival in Hannover, Germany.

Mr. Dakskobler also leads documentary photography workshops for middle and high school students, and teaches NGO youth workers from all over Europe, as well as vulnerable groups, how to produce socially-engaged, documentary photography stories of vulnerable groups and marginalized individuals. He has continued to be on the forefront of promoting social change through his photojournalism, working on pieces that address wide-ranging topics from climate change, ecology, species conservation, human rights and social issues, from poverty in Slovenia to fishermen in Istanbul, Italy’s Venice lagoon, and land-grabbing in Senegal.

Mr. Dakskobler visited San Diego and several other U.S. cities in February of 2018 under the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) as part of a multi-regional delegation focused on promoting social change through the arts. During his time in San Diego, Mr. Dakskobler and the other delegates met with art-focused community leaders, visited Chicano Park and other prominent sites in the Logan Heights community, and collaborated with each other and several local artists for a memorable Art Soup exhibition at Bread & Salt.
