E-Talk-About Series: Mask Diplomacy: Northeast Asia Information and Image Wars

April 14, 2020 Leave a Comment

Thank you to all who joined us for another engaging E-Talk-About event this past Tuesday, as Dr. Nancy Snow shared her insight on how China, South Korea, and Japan have all responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. In true professorial fashion, Snow assigned them “grades”: South Korea with an A-, China with a C, and Japan with a D+. She expressed that although cultural differences have an impact on the responses, one commonality that remains is Mask Diplomacy.  “[When] you put a mask on, it’s not just to protect you, but it’s also to mirror each other – that we are being mindful in kind of a mutually respectful way of each other. Even social distancing is a new sign of respect,” Snow explains. Despite uncertainty, Snow remains positive and hopeful. “Even though we are meeting online, we are more connected to each other than ever, and as a result going forward, I think that we will see – and I hope to see – more cooperation [and] more collaboration among nations and the people of the nations.”
