I recently had the privilege of leading a sports diplomacy exchange in Romania, in collaboration with our implementing partners, PH International. This journey was not only a pivotal step in my professional development but also a profound personal experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and enhanced my leadership abilities.
The core objective of the Sports for Social Change (SSC) Program, sponsored by the State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA), was to empower community leaders to establish inclusive and motivational sports initiatives within their localities. By providing them with essential skills and resources, the program aimed to instill confidence and promote personal growth among young athletes.
One of the program’s major highlights was our visit to Motivation Romania, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving children and adults with disabilities. We participated in an independent living camp, which offers crucial support to individuals adjusting to disabilities, helping them lead independent lives. Another noteworthy experience was a roundtable discussion at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, where we exchanged invaluable ideas with Romanian officials, educators, and NGO partners focused on advancing disability rights. Our interaction with Ambassador Kavalec, also from San Diego, was particularly memorable. She hosted us warmly and engaged us in meaningful discussions about the challenges and opportunities for people with disabilities in Romania, covering topics like wheelchair accessibility, parking enforcement, and ways to boost participation in sports and cultural activities.
Additionally, a kayaking session at Bucharest Lake with Kayak Champions was immensely enlightening. We learned not only the basics of safely transferring from wheelchairs into kayaks but also proper paddling techniques. This was followed by an exhilarating Dragon Boat activity, which was both challenging and rewarding.
This trip was truly inspirational, fostering mutual learning and significantly contributing to my growth as a leader. The experience underscored the transformative power of sports and reinforced my commitment to using athletic programs as a tool for social change.
