What happens when you bring students from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace and the International Rescue Committee together for an afternoon of dance? Friendship, laughter, and understanding!
Welcomed by Congresswoman Susan Davis, Amirah Sackett, a world renowned hip hop dancer, teacher, and choreographer who performed at our 2018 Signature Event, led a hip hop dance workshop at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace on Friday, November 9th. Over 80 high school girls filled the gymnasium to learn about the history of hip hop and a choreographed dance. But first, Amirah shared her journey of challenging stereotypes about Muslim women in the U.S. and abroad through hip hop and brought the group closer together by shedding light on our similarities. The event concluded with a freestyle cypher, where all girls had the opportunity to enter the circle and express themselves through their dance moves. The memories created during this time together will last a lifetime.
