On March 14th, we were honored to co-host with La Jolla Country Day School and the Preuss School UC San Diego a Global Social Hour dedicated to one of the 2019 US Secretaryย of State International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awardees. Naw Kโnyaw Paw, the awardee, is a human rights activist from Burma who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and courage in championing minority rights in Burma. Her organisation, the Karen Women’s Organization (KWO), was the first, and one of the few, in Burma to publicly condemn the military-led violence against the Rohingya people. During her visit she met with local professional counterparts, elected officials, schools and community members to share experiences, ideas on how to empower best women in Burma and in the US. The reception was a wonderful opportunity for students, parents and community members to learn more about the human rights situation in Burma, the journey that Naw K’nyaw Paw went through as a refugee in Thailand and how today, through her organisation, she supports and advocates for Karen women and children victims of military abuses.
